SupeRIA kidz programme is initiated based on the Malaysian Ministry of Education call for a shift in education catering for remedial Instruction programme. Remedial Instruction (RI) is a focus on teaching and learning pedagogies/practices/activities catered towards students with low English language proficiency. SupeRIA kidz is an intervention remediation programme that is designed to reach out to students who know some English but not enough to be adequately proficient.

Malaysia Education Dropout Document report issued by a non-governmental organization (NGO) For Malaysia 2023 highlighted that total of 175,304 (13%) children at the end of primary school age in Malaysia are reported to be unable to read while 1.01 million (5.03%) Malaysians are still lacking in literacy skills. In 2000, the Malaysian Ministry of Education introduced a program entitled “Literacy and Numeracy Screening” (LINUS) to enhance learners’ language proficiency. Despite the existence of this program, research shows that there are numbers of primary school students who are illiterate. Hence SupeRIAkids program aims to ensure that every pupil can attain basic literacy and numeracy skills includes language skills enhancement in speaking and reading through active assistance from university students who act as facilitators. It is important to ensure that all Malaysian children have access to the educational opportunities by providing them at the most basic level, every student needs to be fully literate and numerate. The new intervention focuses on improving special need children education activities by equipping them with appropriate teaching materials which is relevant with 2 the global agenda of SGD 4 (Quality education), KEGA 10 and Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025

The objectives of this intervention programme are to provide learning support to pupils who lag far behind their counterparts in school performance, provide learning activities and practical experiences to students according to their abilities and needs, provide individualized educational programme with intensive remedial support to help pupils consolidate their basic knowledge in different subjects, master the learning methods, strengthen their confidence and enhance the effectiveness of learning.

SupeRIA kidz is planned to be carried out at the respective selected schools in Kuala Nerus. 20 primary school students from 20 schools will be selected to participate in this intervention programme. 50 university students of UniSZA act as student-facilitators who will facilitate the remedial instruction activities that consist of basic literacy and numeracy skills. 12 meetings with the primary school students are expected to be carried out at the respective schools to deliver the intervention modules. The content of modules consist of basic proficiency skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. This specifically designed meaningful learning situations, language environments (especially for English subject), games or activities is to provide personal learning experiences for pupils and stimulate their interest and initiative in learning.
